This paper presents an experimental study of the automatic correction of broken (dead) Web links focusing, in particular, on links broken by the relocation ofWeb pages. Our first contribution is that we developed an algorithm that incorporates a comprehensive set of heuristics, some of which are novel, in a single unified framework. The second contribution is that we conducted a relatively large-scale experiment, and analysis of our results revealed the characteristics of the problem of finding movedWeb pages. We demonstrated empirically that the problem of searching for moved pages is different from typical information retrieval problems. First, it is impossible to identify the final destination until the page is moved, so the index-server approach is not necessarily effective. Secondly, there is a large bias about where the new address is likely to be and crawler-based solutions can be effectively implemented, avoiding the need to search the entire Web. We analyzed the experimental results in detail to show how important each heuristic is in real Web settings, and conducted statistical analyses to show that our algorithm succeeds in correctly finding new links for more than 70% of broken links at 95% confidence level.

I was up at least 30' over the top of the houses below and got careless. I'd cut a branch off on my right side and was passing the chainSaw between my face and my climbing rope to cut one off on the left.

Of course I leaned back away from the tree and pointed the bar of the saw straight up to present the narrowest profile as it went between me and the rope. My saw was idled up high enough to keep he chain spinning (a noNoNO!) because it didn't like the water, alcohol, and gas mix from the last station. You see where I'm going with this?

Well, not that far. The tip of the saw barely touched my rope and cut it half through. I dropped the saw to swing below my feet on it's lanyard and grabbed both ends of the rope above the cut. Luckily I use a doublebraided rockClimbing rope that's abraisionResistant. That ain't cutProof tho.

Murphy (of law fame) and serendepity (luck's sister) were both smiling. It didn't cut all the way thru, but it did cut the standingEnd away from my D-Ring. I lost about 60' of rope, which I had to trim off while standing on spurs with my bucking strap. And yeah, it WAS a tall assed tree.

Luckily I didn't have to pull all 240' of rope up. It was buried under and woven through a pile of dropped branches. The tree was between and over two houses, both about 8' away. I had to drop the branches straight down the tree trunk and my groundMan was pretty slack.

I was so exhausted I was light headed. That's why I got careless. I've still got pretty good strength in the short term, but I can't pull in enough oxygen to feed the muscles without taking frequent breaks. I was pushing to finish the job. Metaphorically, I'm like a bull dozer with a dirty air filter.

That tree must have been over 90' tall 'cause when I rappeled down I had to drop the last 8'. Ran out of rope. For the 1stResponders and extremeSportsMen out there treeClimbers use the doubled rope rappel anchoring the working end to the saddle with a long tailed bowlin and use the tail to make a brakeHitchKnot on the body of the rope. The rope just slips over the top anchor point as you move up or down. That lets you turn loose and work with both hands while suspended. The brake ain't between the saddle and the rope. You don't need no fancy release knot at the top anchor. It does cut the ropes working length in half, but it also divides the stresses on the rope and the brake by two everywhere but at the anchor.

With no disrespect intended to the Jackson family, this sure does reveal the shallowness of our value system in this country.

This puts things into perspective:

While the focus today, tomorrow and for the next God-knows-how-many-days will be the death of a pop culture icon; while many will mourn, wail and quite literally make fools of themselves over it and while as many will speak endlessly about it, allow me, if only for a moment, to remind us all that others have died this month; others whose lives were cut short; others who leave behind loved ones and whose families will dearly miss them; families who'll suffer with much more dignity and honor than we'll be exposed to on the tube in the coming days.

Rather than use a prescribed approach of creating some topic forums upfront, we instead had just one forum. Our other option was having some topic forums and a miscellaneous forum, but we found one forum was easy. And you want this to be as easy as possible at the start, the less choices the better. All this is related to a past post on broad buckets as a fertile ground.

Next, is to group these posts into various forums so we have spaces to keep talking about various topics. I like this way of creating forums, ie. the bottom-up content is driving the forums to be created, rather than the prescriptive approach…this is great as now we will have forums on topics people will want to talk about…who knows these may one day become their own community.

This process of categorising these forums would have been easier if our forum had a tagging feature (similar to Clearspace). Further to this, tag clouds are great for a glance at what topics are most prevalent on people’s minds, and comparing them to topics of a lesser magnification.

My advice to anyone that is worried that others might judge them for youthful or other indiscretions, is to make sure to be very active on the Internet, because only a small fraction will be accessible if you get Googled. Anything bad will be diluted into the long tail of you.

Of course, in the future Google might be replaced by superior search engine that will provide access to all of its index. But even then, slogging through tens of thousands of links would discourage the most diligent of employers.

Microwaving Water!

A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the! water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup 'blew up' into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc.., (nothing metal).

General Electric's Response:

Thanks for contacting us, I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup wh en it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds! before moving it or adding anything into it.

Here is what our local science teacher had to say on the matter: 'Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beverage spews when opened after having been shaken.'

If you pass this on you could very well save someone from a lot of pain and suffering.

Auto-Fill Delicious.com v5’s Tag Field - Will automatically fill in the “Save a Bookmark on Delicious” page with the tags from the URL.
AutoDelicious - Adds an auto-complete feature for tags on the Delicious posting page.

Del.icio.us: Bundle sorter - Will put any unbundled tags at the beginning of the list so you can easily find them and rectify the situation.
Delicious.com - Auto-Highlight Bundled Tags - Will automatically check the “Highlight tags already in another bundle” any time you load the bundle editing page.
Delicious.com - Sort Visible Links - Allows you to sort your visible bookmarks by title, url, popularity or the default method.
Delicious for Google Reader - Adds an “Add to delicious” button inside of Google Reader.
Delicious.com Thumbs - Allows you to add thumbnail images of web sites to your bookmarks for easier site recognition as you browse through them.
delicious star rater - Gives you the ability to assign star ratings to your bookmarks so that you can easily spot the ones that are most important to you.

google meet delicious - Searches your bookmarks at the same time you search Google.
Remember Delicious Login Info - Remembers your login info so you can login to the site faster.

iPhone and iPod Touch Applications
While it’s a bit surprising that Delicious hasn’t released an official iPhone application yet, there are a few out there that are filling the gap until that inevitable day. Apps like Tasty give you just about every feature a die hard Delicious user could want on a mobile phone.
Bookmarks - Allows you to access your Delicious account from the iPhone so that you can use your bookmarks. It also allows you to add new ones from within Safari.
Red Delicious - Give your iPhone the ability to see your most recent bookmarks, explore by tag, search by keyword, see the most popular sites being bookmarked and more.
Tags - Allows you to browse your tags in an animated tag cloud, sync your bookmarks with Delicious, explore new ones and several more nifty features.
Tasty - Gives you a more visual representation of your Delicious bookmarks on the iPhone by letting you see favicons and screenshots of your bookmarks. Also allows you to browse, add, edit and more.
Mobile Applications
It seems like it took forever for Delicious to release m.delicious.com. Here are three great options for accessing Delicious from your mobile phone - perfect for those without iPhones.
Delicious Mona - A mobile application that allows you to read your news, save the site to Delicious, and then have access to it once you get to your computer so you can read it full screen.
m.delicious.com - A condensed version of Delicious from the site itself.
Mobilicio.us - A simple mobile-friendly interface for accessing your Delicious bookmarks from any web-enabled phone.
Visualization Tools
There are some fascinating tools out there for seeing Delicious in totally new, visual, ways. Some of them, like Delicious Soup, may seem a bit silly at first, but they grow on you as you explore what they can actually do.
del.icio.us direc.tor - Allows you to view your bookmark tags in a hierarchy and then sort them by name, tags or time created.
del.icio.us network explorer - Enter a username and see their connections, click on one and see all of their connections, and so on. Gets quite interesting after you’ve done a few and see how many crossovers there are.
Delicious Soup - A Flash based interface that shows your tags as jiggling spheres of a pink plasma like substance, the more sites in the tag, the larger it is. Click on one and it is brought to the center while receiving information at the bottom of the interface about that particular tag.
expialidocio.us - See your history on Delicious as a histogram. Slide along the timeline to see how many bookmarks you’ve added, a tag cloud for the specified time, and more.
extisp.icio.us - Allows you to generate a tag cloud for any user on Delicious and then explore what they have added to each of those tags.
graph.icio.us - Enter any user’s name and see a graph of their tags for the last 10 bookmarks they’ve added and explore them.
HubLog - Enter a tag you wish to research and get a Java representation of it that you can explore and see how people use it and what other words they connect it with.
LiveMarks - Watch an auto updating stream of bookmarks as they are added to Delicious. LiveMarks will even tell you if they are new to the system.
mapping del.icio.us - Through the use of geotags, you can map out the locations of your bookmarks to show off truly how much it is the world wide web.
Revealicious - Enter your user information and you will see a panel showing you all of your tags. Once you hover over one it will tell you the percentage of the bookmarks you use it for, and once you click on the tag, you get even more graphical breakdowns of just how you use that tag.
Thumblicio.us - See posts from any tag on Delicious as clickable thumbnails. Hover over any of them to learn more.
WordPress Plugins
Why not make Delicious work with your WordPress powered blog? Tools like del.icio.us for WordPress are perfect for making your bookmarks that much more social by sharing them with your readers.
del.icio.us for WordPress - Display your latest bookmarks on your blog with the option of showing descriptions or tags. del.icio.us for WordPress also allows filtering by tags.

Twitt(url)y - If you like the Digg interface and you like Twitter, then this is the tool for you. Rather than users’ votes, Twitturly counts links posted on Twitter to content in order to include and then rank the content. The more votes an item gets, the higher it displays on the list. Only the top 100 items are shown at a time. Twitturly also tracks the number of Tweets with links that a particular Twitter user has posted. Twitter Search - Probably the most popular way to filter Twitter noise is to use the search tool. Trending topics are displayed and an array of search operators/options allow you to be pretty specific about what you’re looking for.

Understanding Open Stack, the Connective Tissue of the Social Web titleLinksSource

I’ve been conducting interviews for my upcoming report on the Future of Social Networks, and have spent time with many vendors that have started to mention the “Open Stack” (both Google and Plaxo mentioned this to me). As a web decision maker (I call you a web strategist) you need to be aware of emerging technologies and how they impact your strategy.

The Open Stack (much like an application stack) is a set of technologies that allow for the passing, sharing of data across multiple containers and platforms, learn the details from the Plaxo guys. To be specific, the stack consists of OpenID, OAuth, OpenSocial, XRDS-Simple, and Portable Contacts. It’s a tendons between bones, it’s the sinew between muscles, it’s what I call “connective tissues”.

If you’ve been watching the news, major platforms are adopting these technologies, most recently, the big giant Facebook (who is known for being more closed and proprietary than others) has joined the Open ID Foundation.

Steve Kuhn took notes from a recent Web 2.0 event which explains why OpenStack and what the technologies do. Kris was at the same event and gives more details into how it works. Uncle Marc Canter, who flaked on my meeting with him, (he’ll say it was me who flaked, don’t believe him) thinks broader about the OpenMesh, in between painting his fence with architecture diagrams.

So what’s my report going to say? I’m looking at the impact of these technologies and others looking 3-5 years out and how they impact brands, consumers, and the community. What kind of crazy things can happen? The act of friending could go away, registration pages could die, and corporate product pages may look more like wikis, yup, anything’s possible. I’ve already finished many of my interviews folks such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, RWW, Razorfish, Dell, Gigya, Intel, Meebo, Federated Media and others –and have found a few patterns. more to come soon.

Robotic Faces are Coming

"New Scientist reports on a patent application that suggests implanting polymer muscles beneath the skin of people suffering paralysis of the face to give them control of their features. The technique has already been used successfully to reanimate the eyelids of human cadavers. Movement could be returned to other facial features and even paralyzed limbs in the same way, the surgeons at University of California Davis say. The full patent application is also available on the WIPO site."

include the following bills in any economic stimulus package that might
be considered. The Veterans' Small Business Promotion Act of 2009 (HR 294) to
renew VA authority to guarantee loans of up to $500,000 for small

I have some friends out there. Just as certain I have detractors. I'm not sure of the ratio. I count most of you, among the first. Even those among the second have something to offer me.

One of them once compared me to Sysyphus. The metaphor works well. With the exception that 'the gods', if such, are on the other side of Righteous. On reflection I took it as a hint. The conclusion works for me.

My concern is for friends&Family, more than self. The results of those personality and IQ tests they like to give (in prep for their boxes and labels) shows I have advantage in IQ regarding spatal, math, logic, reading, and such. The social quadrant of a circular graph though, shows nil. When I see ongoing dialogue that stops when I show up I get concerned.

A symptom of my comorbid (that word fasinates me) conditions is that I can hyperfocus on topics/tasks that interest me. The rest gets relegated to the cyclone of brilliant ideas swirling around without assigned relevence.

It's a sad fact that I'm not that interested in my own well-being. Unless it's causing so much pain that I can't focus on anything else or take care of those who depend on me. I [b]am[/b] interested in how my well-being affects those I am interested in. It starts around September or October. I'm pretty sure it's either viral or drug resistant bacterial, because it doesn't respond to "Z-paks" or other antibiotics. Although the local newspapers just reported there's only been two cases of influenza reported. So far. The local clinics have been jam packed.

When my daughter and I first got it in October, the doctor said her's was probably viral, and treated the symptoms. Mine, he said was going to treat as bacterial because I'm COPD and my lungs are susceptible to pneumonia. My daughter and I both had flue shots, and I also had the pneumonia shot weeks before getting sick.

First symptoms, the first time you get it, are burning lips and nasal membranes. Followed closely with the nose running suddenly with very watery mucus, the ears getting itchy inside, and the back of the throat getting scratchy where the sinuses drain into it.

It seems to be opportunistic in that if a person has problems with sinuses, ear infections, or lungs, that's where it hits hardest first. Otherwise, it just causes a sore throat, and moves down to the stomach.

When it hits the stomach the first time, after some rumbling and maybe light cramps, it's sudden, explosive diarrhea, often with vomiting at the same time. It takes a week to ten days to run it's complete course with the the bad diarrhea lasting 24-36 hours. I know of two people personally that soiled their clothes.

Around the transition time between upper-respiratory and digestive systems there's a couple of days where the low-grade fever spikes and you feel bad enough to want bed rest.

This thing must mutate very fast, because those susectable, will catch it right back within a couple of weeks, and over and over afterwards. The only good news is that each time the symptoms are a little milder. It does seem to eventually change enough, or cross propagate, and hit hard enough to knock you down again.

Anecdotally, and I guess this is all ancedote, or word of mouth, Children are a favorite vector, and the old are hit hardest. I've heard of cases with these symptoms personally as far East as Brinkley, North as Concord, West as Fort Smith, and South as Little Rock. I'm sending this out on my mailingList and posting it to syndicNation to see if it's more wide spread than Arkansas.

I believe all of it, and need to work towards accepting much of it.

I Believe...A Birth Certificate shows that we were born. A Death Certificate shows that we died. Pictures show that we lived!

I Believe...That just because two people argue, It doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, It doesn't mean they do love each other.

I Believe...That we don't have to change friends if We understand that friends change.

I'm finally consolidating my blogSpot webLogs into one openIDeas blog. There's too many to manage effectively (i.e. remove spamPosts) or keep current. Some topics of interest are suffering from neglect and have been posted on one blog when they would be better represented in others.

This means that posts I'm pulling in here are going to have broken tagLinks if they point to any of those blogs. It's my intent though to leave the 'empty' blogs up for a while with tagLinks redirecting to here. I'm also tagLinking all the posts from them with the blog titles. My first blog, acronyms&Me will be tagged acronymsAndMe, since blogger won't allow the ampersand in tags. Ditto code&Scripts -> codeAndScripts. Arbitrarily reformatting folks text is a topic for another post. For instance, to use this great blog template I had to searchAndReplace text-transform="uppercase" with text-transform="none". And why do they feel the need to sort tags alphabetically. There could be information in tags' relationship to each other. i.e. subject-predicate-object Why all the paranoia about mixing data and code?

Few in civilian life know much about it because of the intense nature of what it is. Stories have surfaced as to what others experienced in undergoing it, but even these are few as those who do persevere it are expected to not release the details of what happens.

The description as best I could decipher is akin to being caught behind enemy lines. Your objective is to survive for periods without the basics. You are to do so for as long as possible by not being captured (hence the "evade" phase.) When captured you are to react as though those who hold you are in fact the enemy, and as they do things like waterboard you, break fingers, etc., you are to rely upon all your ability as an honorable member of the defense forces of the United States to resist, not give up your information, nor of your mission. The more you resist the more those who run the program are encouraged to hurt you to tempt you to break. The only major caveat they are asked to observe is not to break any major bones.

Comforting.

At some point in the two weeks you are given a chance to plot an escape, attempt that escape, and you likely will be caught and punished for doing it.

The entire point of the exercise is to wear you down, to wear you out, and to test your ability to survive under literally the worst possible circumstances.

Survival Guide for Veterans

Far too often, military veterans find themselves desperately short of the information they need as they make the torturous quest for benefits within one of this countrys most daunting bureaucracies, the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Skip to next paragraph Officials say help is on the way, but administrators are forever promising to streamline procedures for an era of conquered paperwork that never seems to come. That is why it is heartening to see that one promising form of help has indeed arrived: a 599-page guide to veterans issues, from educational help to vocational rehabilitation, from housing to citizenship.

Its called The American Veterans and Servicemembers Survival Guide, and it comes, unsurprisingly, from outside the system. It is a publication of the nonprofit advocacy group Veterans for America, available as a free download atveteransforamerica.org.

This electronic book is a descendant of The Viet Vet Survival Guide, which was published a decade after the end of that conflict when veterans were still being routinely and shamefully denied their rights. The new book was written by veterans and lawyers for a new generation of soldiers with old problems, like post-traumatic stress, and new ones like traumatic brain injury, the brutal legacy of Iraqs and Afghanistans roadside bombs.

The authors caution that while the guide will help a veteran understand whats going on, it is not a substitute for a good lawyer or other advocate. And it isnt the only source of information: The government, too, has vast Web sites explaining things for example, how officers help veterans through the disability evaluation system. (In military acronyms, its how the Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer, or Peblo, helps with the D.E.S.)

The Survival Guide does this, too, but with a difference: It also warns veterans to pay careful attention to what you say to your Peblo, because the Peblo is not required to act in their best interests the way an attorney is, and things told to a Peblo are not necessarily confidential.

No book will ever defeat a bureaucracy this large, but a book can help people to subdue it. Veterans and their families often praise the dedication of health-care providers, but at the same time express utter frustration over incomprehensible thickets of rules and the glacial pace at which benefits and appeals are decided.

Unless and until the government significantly improves its treatment of veterans and our hopes are high for progress under Gen. Eric Shinseki, President-elect Barack Obamas nominee to run Veterans Affairs they will have to keep looking to one another for help, as they always have. This veterans guide looks like a powerful updating of that old tradition.

You're an 18 or 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley, 11-14-1965, LZ Xray, Vietnam. Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or
200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out,

you know this is the day. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Ed
Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.

And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise, ID

Veterans are at Risk for Developing Mesothelioma

Veterans from all branches of the armed forces including the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines are at risk for developing mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure sustained while on active duty serving their country. Over time, these military veterans and particularly, Navy veterans and shipyard workers, have demonstrated a higher rate of developing mesothelioma than individuals with no military history. These brave men and women, who so honorably served our country from World War II through the Vietnam War, were unknowingly exposed to high levels of airborne asbestos dust throughout their tours of duty. Until the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, products containing asbestos were made and used extensively in military establishments and on Navy warships and submarines. Warships were constructed using many types of asbestos containing products including pipe-fittings, gaskets, cables, cement, joint compound and boiler insulation just to name a few. Military vehicles were equipped with asbestos containing gaskets, clutches and brakes. When constructing buildings on our nation’s army bases floor covering materials, cement mixtures and plumbing systems frequently contained asbestos based products. The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,

I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.

My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,

My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,

Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."
