Derek Jeter

I don't get impressed by folks too easily. Derek Jeter just proved himself an exception to that tonight in his interview on 60 Minutes.

I don't care what kind of ball player he is, although I was convinced he's one of the greats.

I don't care what race he is, or what combination. Is my combination of Scottish, Irish, and Souix any less significant than my daughter's being half Latino? That we're a nation of cross-bred mongrels is what makes us a force to contend with.

I don't even care that he represents being a drug free achiever that only uses honest hard work and talent to get ahead. I do care that he don't desert his friends and co-players 'because they have a problem'. He chooses to focus and point out that one of his slugger pals is a great guy that cares about people instead of judging a life by a life choice. Even is that choice was a mistake.

I care that Derek displayed great attitude. In the interview and on the streets with 'the fans'. I like the Derek Jeter reflected in the comments made by friends, co-workers, and family.

None of his interview smelled to me of being contrived or put on for the camera. His persona and attitude showed through old clips and recent.

I've got another hero half my age now. The others are those kids doing their duty day in and day out overseas. Even if the whys and replies don't stand up very well. Just like I did 34 years ago.
