There are significant amounts of fire equipment ready to be made available immediately to FD's specifically affected by Katrina and Rita in the Gulf States.
If you are one of those FD's, are in contact with, or know how to reach some of these "needy" FD's, please have them contact the FEMA/Adopt-A-Firehouse call center immediately. The call center number is 1-800-250-9036 and the email address is fireaid@dhs.gov. The center is open every day from 7am to 7pm (EDT) until further notice, and they especially need CONTACT info for FD's affected by Katrina and Rita.
All equipment donations are being managed by a fire service steering committee (IAFC, IAFF, NVFC, NFFF and others as well) representing the numerous relief efforts currently underway throughout this nation. This committee conference calls every day to insure the fire departments in need are matched up and they get what they need-immediately.
But the issue is REACHING OUT to the FD's who need this stuff. Currently the IAFF, the IAFC, the NVFC and others ARE working with State and Regional fire organizations to do so. But so many of them are in such remote areas ....that many have no idea of
this availability. If you or anyone you know may be able to forward this information to those FD's, it would be a big help. Also, if you have firefighters or related EMA personnel working those areas now -forward this e-mail to them and they may be in contact with the folks in need.
ALSO---A quick update on the firefighters "Shirts Off Our Backs" program. 20,000+ brand new donated firefighter shirts from Firefighters (and even some mfgs such as www.AsiWear.com & www.rescuetees.com ) and FD's all over the USA, Canada and World have been shipped to receiving points in Louisiana. The program got some great coverage this week on CNN Headline News as well as local DC area media. Both the NVFC and the IAFF will be receiving the shirts via the DVFA this coming week at their coordinati
ng sites down south. Below is an excellent article with photos about the program.
